HEPATITIS

WHAT IS IT -

·       Inflammation of liver

o   HEPAT – LIVER

o   It is – INFLAMMATION

MEMORY TRICK

·        Acute Types – Hep A and E - Both transmitted through fecal-oral route

·        Chronic Types – Hep B, C and D (All consonants) - All transmitted through blood & body fluids

HEP A

Acute only

Fecal-oral (Contaminated food & water)

Anti-HAV

·       + IgM= active infection

·        + IgG= past infection (recovered)

Rest & supportive treatment (resolves on own)

·       Hep A vaccine

·        Hand hygiene

HEP B

Acute & Chronic

Blood & body fluids (Childbirth, sex, IV drug use)

·       + HBsAg= active infection

·        + Anti-HBS= past infection (recovered)

ACUTE -Supportive

CHRONIC - Anti-virals

·       Hep B vaccine

·       Hand hygiene

·        Sharp precautions

HEP C

Acute & Chronic

Blood & body fluids (Childbirth, sex, IV drug use)

Most common among IV drug use

+ Anti-HCV

ACUTE -Supportive

CHRONIC - Anti-virals

·       Hand hygiene

·       Sharp precautions

·        No vaccine

HEP D

Acute & Chronic

Occurs in conjunction with Hepatitis B

Remember B & D are best buds

·       + Anti-HDV

·        + HDAg (Hep D antigen)

ACUTE -Supportive

CHRONIC - Anti-virals

·       Hep B vaccine

·       Hand hygiene

·        No vaccine

HEP E

Acute only

Fecal-oral (Contaminated food & water)

Most common in 3rd world countries

+ Anti-HEV

Rest & supportive treatment (resolves on own)

·       Fully cook food

·       Hand hygiene

·        No vaccine
