INDICATIONS

MECHANISM OF ACION

Anxiety Disorder, Acute Stress Disorder, Seizures, Insomnia, Alcohol Withdrawal, Muscle Spasms

Enhance the effects of GABA, calming neurotransmitter, to depress the CNS and suppress anxiety and seizure activity.

 

ADVERSE EFFECTS

CONTRAINDICATIONS

INTERACTIONS

A benzodiazepine can cause CNS depression but also be AWARE that there is a risk of acute toxicity.

A: Amnesia

W: Withdrawal Effects (insomnia, anxiety, tremors)

A: Anxiety (Paradoxical response)

R: Respiratory Depression

E: Excessive Fatigue (sedation)

Pregnancy, Sleep Apnea, Respiratory Depression, Glaucoma, Older Adults, Liver Disease

 

 

NURSING INTERVENTIONS & PATIENT EDUCATION

-Antidote: Flumazenil

-Risk of Addiction

-Black Box Warning: do not combine with opioids or alcohol due to risk of CNS/Respiratory Depression
